Workshop by Linda Jasmin Mayer, curated by Sara Basta
A collaboration between the Art for Therapy course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and the Art Workshop at Macro
During the workshop, the concept of the “collective body” will be explored through a creative process inspired by siphonophores, marine organisms that challenge traditional definitions of the individual and the collective. Siphonophores belong to the plankton, a diverse group of organisms that move mainly thanks to ocean currents. In the workshop, we will explore cooperation, interdependence and collaborative organisation as both biological and artistic phenomena.
A sculptural extension, inspired by the modular structure of siphonophores, will be built and worn simultaneously by the group of participants, transforming them into a single body. The sculpture will be made from lightweight, translucent materials such as silk and sheer fabrics, combined with a flexible structure that allows for fluid and adaptable movements. The choice of materials evokes the mobile, lightweight nature of plankton and siphonophores, emphasising the idea of a form that changes and adapts to its surroundings.
