Web design, video subtitling and lettering for inclusive storytelling

On 4-5-6 June 2024, in Room 6B of the Campo Boario site of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome – Largo Dino Frisullo s.n.c., from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., the second edition of INCLUSIVE ARTS i.e. a workshop open to all students of ABA Rome on the expressive opportunities offered by inclusive design in the artistic field.
The European accessibility legislation, which is being progressively implemented, obliges digital content providers to create accessible versions for people with disabilities.
How can specific professional skills be developed?
The technical-practical workshop INCLUSIVE ARTS 2024 will guide you in learning some ‘inclusive’ communication techniques and procedures that will be increasingly in demand in the public and private sectors.

Programme:
4 June Antonio Lo Iacono, with over twenty years of experience in the sector and founder in 2010 of Numeriprimi, a Florentine web agency specialising in dynamic and accessible websites, will present us in the first part of the day with a development environment on ARCO CMS where the technical guidelines in the field of web accessibility will be summarised, thanks to a homepage and specific internal pages designed ad hoc. The same homepage and internal web pages will be available to participating students in the second part of the workshop, so they can practise making the content, text, multimedia, graphics and architecture of a website in the spirit of inclusive design.
On 5 June, Veronica Bonatesta, a graphic designer and expert in creative subtitling, a branch of “ Accessible Filmmaking” theorised by Pablo Romero Fresco, will introduce concepts of accessibility for an audiovisual product, focusing in particular on subtitling. There will be an overview of how accessibility is addressed in audiovisual products, but the focus will be on “creative” subtitling, illustrating all the steps necessary to make it functional from the conception and pre-production phase of an audiovisual work. During the workshop, creative subtitles will be created with the support of the speaker and the guidance gained throughout the day. The workshop offers the opportunity to understand how another approach to subtitling can make an audiovisual product accessible and usable to a wider audience.
6 June Claudio Madella, visual designer – member of AIAP (Italian Association of Visual Communication Design) since 2008, founder ofOfficina Tipografica Novepunti (honourable mention at the XXIII Compasso d’Oro), organiser of the Letterpress Workers International Summit, lecturer at the Higher School of Applied Art in Milan (letterpress letterpress and bookbinding), Certificate of Typographic Excellence 2020 from the Type Directors Club New York and, in 2021, that of the Type Directors Club Tokyo – will guide us in an in-depth study of the design of letters and their use, working in a positive and negative sense on their inclusiveness; during the working day, the evolution of typeface design will be illustrated through examples of historical and contemporary use; starting from the advent of letterpress printing, it will be possible to follow the path of typographic design up to analogue and digital experiments; using drawing, hand composition, the collage technique and the aid of sound media, the workshop offers the opportunity to better understand the physicality of typefaces, their sense of reading and their possibilities of use.

Participation method:
Students who wish to participate in the workshop and have a credit recognised can send a specific booking request to: e.bisenzi@abaroma.it
The workshop relates to the Editorial Graphic Design and Graphic Design courses of the School of Artistic Design for Business at ABA Rome and is organised by Prof. Enrico Bisenzi, but with additional lecturers involved: Profs. Maria Cristina Reggio, Elena Giulia Rossi, Luca Valerio, Franco Ripa di Meana, Tiziana Maria Contino and Francesco Mazzenga.
There are twenty places available, but those who have booked between the twenty-first and twenty-fifth requests received in chronological order may also attend (in order to replace any last-minute absentees) and, in any case, priority will be given to students on the courses of the aforementioned lecturers.
Although the classroom in which the workshop will be equipped with a dedicated internet connection and PCs with a wide range of useful technological equipment, it is advisable to come equipped with a dedicated connection and technological equipment (a laptop, if possible, equipped in particular with After Effects and/or Premiere for the creative subtitling part), bearing in mind that the workshop work can be carried out in groups. Those who participate in the workshop will receive a paper graphic design kit for their own use, as well as other useful materials and guidelines. Students admitted (even conditionally) to the workshop will be included in specific irfgu2e teams in order to be able to submit the activities requested during the workshop and submit them in full (another requirement to obtain the credit).
