During the period of formation of their artistic practice, it is common for students to encounter difficulties in the process of formalisation: often the implementation is not consistent with the initial project. The “idea” seems to become distorted as the engagement with the chosen medium deepens: the confusion that is generated involves intentions and tools, distancing the student from their own expressive urgency.
The workshop is designed to address this conceptual and practical “glitch”: the aim is to activate other processes of discovery and focus on one’s analytical and synthesis skills. The aim is to identify not only the guiding motivation behind one’s artistic choices but also an effective methodology that allows individual expression to embrace diversification and obstacles as integral parts of the production of the work.
The workshop is expected to run over three years and begins in 2023 with a focusing project: each student will be guided in the process of creating a work, using their own medium but orienting their choices based on the ideas that emerged during the relationship with the other participants.
The meeting hours will be divided into: theoretical lectures and embodiment exercises, body training to relate to others, critical discussions on one’s own production process and a final conversation on the works in their creation phases.
To participate, it is necessary to attend all the meetings and present oneself and one’s work through a description, a story, images or other media, including video (in this case, maximum duration 7 minutes).

Chiara Mu. Born in Rome in 1974. She graduated in 2001 with a degree in Scenography from the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and in Photography in 2002 from the E. Rolli School in Rome. She lived in the UK from 2002 to 2012, where she obtained a two-year Master’s degree in Fine Art from the Chelsea College of Art and Design (London). She was selected for the PhD programme run by the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome in collaboration with the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Performing Arts of Roma Tre University, through which she will develop research focused on the ethical issues arising from one-to-one performance over the three-year period 2023/2026.
Chiara Mu works in the context of specific interventions on place and/or situation, using performance, installations, photography and video as her preferred working methods. She defines herself as a ‘time-based artist’ who inhabits spaces and themes, creating relational strategies between place, objects and bodies, her own and those of visitors. In the construction and creation of her works, she aims to intervene in an intimate and provocative way on the quality of the time spent by those who experience the work, constantly questioning the role of the artist and the visitor in positioning themselves in relation to the work. Considering her artistic practice as a medium, she intends to use it to absorb, process and return aspects of reality that seem to be precluded or hidden, contributing to the process of collective “care” that art often has the privilege of giving rise to as a need and a possibility.
