Only Sound is a sound archive that was created through the collaboration between RAM Radioartemobile and the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
The history
RAM was founded in the early 2000s from the experience of Zerynthia. It was initially a radio on the move, which literally travelled and stopped at art venues in Italy and Europe, broadcasting via internet streaming. RAM tells the story of the present as it happens: happenings, interviews, sound projects, round tables and exhibitions are some of the contents of the live broadcasts. Subsequently, RAM acquired a real organisation and a physical headquarters, where work was done on the relationship between visual and sound; since 2002, it has been broadcasting and recording the transmission simultaneously, beginning to build an archive.
Over the years, the various experiences with sound have been incorporated into the Sound Art Museum. These activities gave rise to the MPDS Audio Archive, which unifies and systematises all the previous experiences: not only sound art but also the talks, interviews and live radio broadcasts from the various biennials.
The present
Only Sound is an archive of about 5,000 audio files that Zerynthia has chosen to donate to the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome with the idea that it is not only a place for consultation and documentation, but a living space for experimentation from which to start to provoke reflection, deepen knowledge and create events. The archive is available to students and professors, as well as to artists, curators and the public.
The station is a work – No Man’s Story – created specifically for Only Sound by the artist H.H.LIM.
