Bringing augmented reality to theatre and especially to opera. It is on this innovative and almost revolutionary project that the research of set designer, costume designer and director Cristian Taraborrelli has been focused in recent years. His career, which began with a collaboration with Barberio Corsetti and has continued to range from experimental theatre to opera, is now focused on interpreting the latter through multidisciplinary stage forms, combining visual arts and performance with cutting-edge stage technologies. The pilot project for this new vision was undoubtedly the staging of Pagliacci,, a show from 2020, in which the most diverse video technologies were used, in particular multiple large-scale video projections (both overlapping and not), shaped, mapped and masked, on different levels and on various materials including tulle, tripoline, fabrics, earth and plastic materials; in addition to the video projectors, there was a large LED wall, which was revealed above the proscenium at specific moments in the opera.
A real technical challenge: augmented reality in real time This means that part of the show is filmed by various cameras on a large green set on stage (visible to the audience) and, behind the scenes, a video director sends it to graphics servers that insert it into the 3D world created ad hoc and then send the resulting video signal back to the LED wall above the stage: all in real time.
This is the topic of the interesting and unmissable conference with Cristian Tiraborrelli and those who collaborated in the success of this important event, which will be held on 21 February at 11:00 am in the Aula Magna. It is aimed not only at the students of Set Design but, precisely because of its artistic and technological implications, at all the students and staff of the Academy.
