Beauty and sustainability Sustainable Sculpture in Nature

The Academy of Fine Arts in Rome is pleased to present the HANAMI Event of the Sculpture Course again this year for the 2023 edition. The exhibition is configured as an open itinerary that interacts with the Botanical Garden Space. The title of this edition is “Beauty and Sustainability”. The event will take place next April on the 14th, 15th and 16th with a guided tour from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The exhibition venue within the Botanical Garden Museum is in the area overlooking the Japanese Garden. As is tradition for our institution, this is an event in which the student artists of the Academy’s two Sculpture Courses present works inspired by the beauty of nature and the aesthetic transformation of matter.

All the works on display are a research selection defined by the Project Curator Alessandra Porfidia, lecturer in Sculpture and Head of the School of Sculpture, in collaboration with Professor Patrizia Bisonni, lecturer in Sculpture. The students, in fact, following a free research path, present works that respect the concept of sustainability and respect the spirit of the place. In addition, each work is an expression of an interpretation of signs gathered with time and experience in the natural place and with respect for the Japanese philosophy that animates the Botanical Garden’s Japanese Garden. Harmony and beauty are therefore the expression of research that has evolved step by step in the context of nature. The sign of the void and the play of shadow are recognisable elements in the works on display. We invite you to discover the works, created as a proposal for integrated research between Nature and Artifice.

The Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, as a centre for the study and production of art, takes the opportunity to hold these external workshops to stimulate the creativity of students. Groups of students are available for guided tours to explain the itinerary to the public, illustrating the processes and reasons that justify certain ways and choices of installation spaces, and the creation of the works themselves, to offer an enriched view of the elements.
The event is in fact part of a larger project called “Immaginazione Sostenibile” (“Sustainable Imagination”), started by Alessandra Porfidia ten years ago, a creative process that aims to emphasise the importance of “Doing” with respect for human abilities and nature with poetic sensitivity. The recovery of natural materials, ferrous materials, waste and recycled materials is part of the specific expressive research present in the exhibition.
