Vitorchiano is preparing for a week of events that will be “sculpted” in memory!
On Monday 10 July, the International Peperino Sculpture Symposium will begin in Vitorchiano. The sketches created and exhibited at the Locanda Sant’Agnese from 2 June will take shape in the hands of the students of the School of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome:
- Jessica Pintaldi “Balene di terra – un viaggio verso la libertà”;
- Gabriele Fina “Ligio”;
- Liu Yuzhou “Attesa verso il volo”;
- Karolina Konieczny “Crescita”;
- Francesco Pennacchi “Il Primo passo”;
- Leonardo Mariani “MIMIR”.
It will therefore be possible to observe the creation of the sculptural works live, publicly and directly on site at Largo Ettore Salimbeni Vitorchiano (VT) under the gaze of the Moai.
The students will be guided by the sculptor and professor Oriana Impei, curator of the workshop. Impei herself participated in the 1st Symposium of Sculpture on Peperino in 1990, creating a work that is currently installed in the Valle delle Sculture at the foot of the village of Vitorchiano. A relationship with sculpture that the village has always respected was established in 1990 by the Atan family, originally from Rapa Nui, for the RAI programme “Alla ricerca dell’Arca” by Mino d’Amato, the only Moai outside Easter Island. The link with Rome is also represented by the famous statue of the Capitoline “spinario”, for the people of Vitorchiano “Marzio, the faithful and symbol of Vitorchiano”, of which Luigi Fondi created a peperino sculpture that now welcomes visitors.
In this relationship between identity and innovation, the initiative of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and the Municipality of Vitorchiano aims to promote the art of sculpture and the local volcanic stone, peperino, by once again hosting an International Symposium of Sculpture on Peperino.
In addition to the contemporary art exhibition, the event also includes a workshop on sculpture and a conference with the participation of two distinguished guests: Yoshin Ogata, an internationally renowned Japanese artist, and Giancarlo Lepore, sculptor and former lecturer in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Urbino. For the occasion, some works by the two artists, the sculptor Oriana Impei, Matthias Omahen and Yikun Chen will be exhibited in the Municipal Tower.
Saturday 15th at 6:00 pm As part of the Symposium on the Largo Guglielmi terrace in Piazza Umberto I the following will be presented: “Discover Tuscia – The secret of Italy” the DMO to which the Municipality of Vitorchiano belongs, together with Bagnoregio, Bolsena, Castiglione in Teverina, Celleno and Graffignano, as well as numerous private entities. The project aims to promote and enhance the area through a single brand by creating thematic routes and connections between the villages and places of interest in the area, improving and enhancing existing tourism products and participation in international fairs, in order to reach a wider audience together, developing partnerships with tour operators, and increasing internationalisation through the creation of partnership networks with European tourism promotion and communication agencies.
The managers of the local accommodation and catering businesses were recently involved by the intern and included on the dedicated website: https://discovertuscia.it/scopri-i-borghi/comune-di-vitorchiano/
On Sunday 16th at 10:00 am, the conference will take place in the council chamber of the Municipality of Vitorchiano, on the theme “Nature, Art and Biodiversity”. Local artists will speak, including Cristiana Avenali, regional representative of the national river contracts table, on the topic “Art in the woods, as a link and opportunity for small municipalities”, and Maurizio Gubbiotti, coordinator of Federparchi Lazio, who will present his book “Zootecnia&parchi – Costruire un futuro di sostenibilità ambientale e sociale per un nuovo rapporto tra persone, natura e animali” (“Livestock farming and parks – Building a future of environmental and social sustainability for a new relationship between people, nature and animals”).
Finally, the works created during the Sculpture Symposium will be placed and inaugurated in the autumn along the scenic nature trail in the Vitorchiano area, enriching the visitor experience and further enhancing the village and its landscape.
