How is architecture portrayed? According to Andrea Jemolo, “before photographing, you need to have a clear plan that settles, stratifies and enriches itself in the photographer’s brain”. This general guideline naturally also applies when photographing buildings and monuments. Cities are in constant transformation; they are a living body that changes, but thanks to photography we can obtain information about the place, the form and the way in which the structure interacts with space and light. Sunlight and the illumination of architecture are important because they tell the story of the changing seasons and the passing of the hours. Sometimes it is enough to move a few metres to gain photographic quality, creativity and light.
Andrea Jemolo is known as one of the greatest masters of historical, modern and contemporary architectural photography. Born in Rome in 1957, he made his debut in the 1970s with reportage photos of political commitment. Since the mid-1980s, his interest has shifted towards art and architecture photography. His photographic campaigns range from the monumental remains of ancient Egypt and the Aurelian Walls to work on contemporary architects, such as the documentation of the construction sites of Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI in Rome and Tadao Ando’s Punta della Dogana in Venice, from the Ara Pacis to social housing and the Fosse Ardeatine Memorial, and in sculpture from Roman art to Michelangelo’s Moses, from the Baroque to the art of Nigeria. His extensive photographic archive, A Photographic Archive of Architecture and Art,, now contains over 15,000 images, taken during photographic campaigns conducted since the late 1970s for architecture and art magazines and publishing houses, architects’ studios and important museums and institutions (see: https://jemolo.com/it ).
In addition to the keynote address (compulsory for students enrolled in the Workshop), the Workshop includes two other sessions.
