The declaration adopted by the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), resulting from the SDG Summit of 19-20 September 2023 at the United Nations in New York, reaffirms the urgency of the continuous, fundamental and transformative actions needed to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda, which have been slowed down by the pandemic and geopolitical crises of the last three years. The aim is to reduce everything that can cause unsustainability and, at the same time, to increase the fight against fragility, better defined as antifragility, understood as the ability to act on complex situations to initiate the innovation necessary to achieve real benefits for the planet and for humanity. To be antifragile and therefore resilient, an additional effort of creativity and research will be required. With this specific commitment, the Arts rightfully enter the set of human activities capable of guiding sustainable development and practising that spirit of research, typical of artists, which allows them to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles through innovative solutions. The Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, by joining the UN SDSN (United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network) protocol and on the strength of its excellence in theoretical and practical training at national and international level, is one of the interpreters of Goal 4.7 of the 2030 Agenda in “valuing cultural diversity and the contribution of culture to sustainable development”. The intention is to make an effective contribution to the expansion of the ontological field of sustainable development through the Arts, and to become a reference institution for the entire global scientific, entrepreneurial and artistic community. Prof. Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director of the UN SDSN, and other distinguished professors, entrepreneurs and artists will meet on 28 October in the Great Hall of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome for a study day dedicated to the ontological role of the Arts in Sustainable Development.

  • 2:30 pm Art, sustainable development and living
In the sustainable development model, the spatial component is not a divisible entity, but a systemic and living one. This has introduced the necessary revision of the habitability of places by humans, so experts in design, architecture, urban planning and mobility are focusing their attention from the micro to the macro to establish new ecosystem criteria. In this sense, the panel examines the role of art and creativity in defining those housing and mobility guidelines that can link the SDGs and the most significant international protocols to compatible and sustainable spatial planning.

  • 3:45 pm Art, sustainable development and energy
There are numerous artists and movements exploring the idea of sustainability. Some are focused on the reuse of materials; others, by freeing art from matter, act on a conceptual and philosophical level; still others interweave the creative and research process with the urgency of sustainable development. What positions do the large energy companies take on these issues?
The panel aims to foster a rapprochement between creative and artistic processes and the most advanced research on the production, distribution and use of energy.
