Two events, produced by the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, for the 2019 edition of Altaroma, the capital’s event par excellence dedicated to the best national and international designers, including fashion shows, events, new talents and research projects.
“COREA Project” is the result of a collaboration between the Academy, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the Korean Cultural Institute and the Hanbok Advancement Center. It all started with a workshop at the Korean Cultural Institute, which saw students focus on the study of the hanbok, the traditional Korean garment, and on the various techniques for working with the fabric. This gave rise to eleven original collections, presented on 25 January 2019 at the Prati Bus District: eleven collections, entirely designed and created by the students, in which there is a strong reference to Korean traditions, starting from a Western perspective and from very personal universes, made up of intimate memories, thoughts, interpretations, emotional variations, tastes and original readings.
The hanboks, characterised by graceful lines and shapes that create an aura of serenity and lightness, has retained its basic components for 5,000 years, while its styles and shapes have evolved according to the lifestyle, social conditions and aesthetic taste of each era.
At the event, Korean designer Young Ae Lee presented 21 traditional garments, 11 of which were reinterpreted in a contemporary style.
On 27 January, again for Altaroma, a second event – this time spread across the classrooms and workshops of the Academy of Fine Arts – brought together works, installations and site-specific performances linked to the projects of students on the first- and second-level Fashion Design courses in Fashion Culture and Technology.
From the trench coat to the work overalls, from striped fabric to the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi, from the graphic reproduction of the fabric’s properties to creations against violence against women, from the reworking of aluminium waste to screen prints on fabric: “IN Accademia” is a universe of creative, conceptual and sartorial inspirations, building exhibition and narrative paths around the work developed during the year and in particular within the framework of Altaroma.
