Doctorate in Visual Arts Culture, Practices and Communication

The PhD in Visual Arts Culture, Practices and Communication, currently in the accreditation phase, is divided into three years across two curricula and aims to promote the training of artists capable of carrying out research, design and production activities, interacting critically with the diverse world of international contemporary art. At the same time, it aims to develop high-profile professionals who, thanks to the knowledge they have acquired, can enter the field of art communication in public and private institutions, at national and international level, also using the tools and methodologies offered by new technologies. In this sense, the presence in the PhD programme of the company Kabuto Srl and the company Progetto Katatexilux which deal with the communication of the content of museums and cultural venues through interactive experiences (in particular, Kabuto Srl deals with gamification), constitutes an added value, putting the PhD students in direct contact with a strategic branch of cultural enterprises. Furthermore, the participation of the Azienda Speciale Palaexpo and the Istituto Nazionale di Studi Romani will allow doctoral students to gain experience at two of Italy’s leading cultural institutions of international standing. The doctorate, coordinated by Prof. Dalma Frascarelli, is run in partnership with the Academy of Fine Arts in Frosinone and the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, which will each fund one scholarship.

The course aims to provide doctoral students with specific skills, based on the multidisciplinary pathway, with reference to the two curricula into which the doctorate is divided:

Curriculum A) Tools, methods and new technologies for artistic production

The aim of the curriculum is to encourage the ability to create innovative works in the fields of the visual arts, painting, sculpture, art and editorial graphics, scenography, video, animation, photography, multimedia storytelling, interactive installations and performances. In addition, the aim is to provide doctoral students with tools and methods to address issues related to the art system and market.

Curriculum B) Tools, methods and new technologies for the communication of the visual arts

The curriculum aims to provide doctoral students with advanced skills in the field of new artistic languages, media and visual culture from an interdisciplinary perspective applied to the communication of cultural heritage. The module’s training path aims to facilitate the acquisition of the conceptual and technological components inherent in the different facets of art, curatorial practices and exhibition and digital media within the new art communication tools: from social media to video games, from virtual to augmented reality.
