Introduction
The Hairam APS Association and the Art Forum Würth Capena have been collaborating since 2014 to promote integration projects through art and art therapy, with a constant and growing participation of adults with disabilities in the workshop courses that take place annually at the Art Forum Würth Capena site.
The 12 annual meetings, which have been held for 10 years now, have sometimes been supplemented thanks to funding received by the association, which has always been keen to develop these activities and increase the quality of the commitment by expanding the range on offer.
The annual integrated exhibitions have increasingly become a key event for hundreds of participating artists, and the Performance and Workshop opportunities that have brought them to life have allowed users to grasp and assimilate the creative potential of people with disabilities, enhancing the aims of the project.
The Round Tables on quality criteria in services for people with disabilities in Lazio have involved an increasing number of extraterritorial organisations, and have created an interaction between all the social contexts that deal with the integration of people with disabilities, such as bodies, municipalities, universities, academies, day centres, associations and cooperatives, contributing over time to the creation of a dense and solid social network that has its driving force in the Art Forum Würth Capena.
The theme of the Fantastic Animal
This year’s artistic proposal is, as always, based on the inspiration that emerged from the current exhibition: “Namibia, artists of a new generation”. But unlike in previous editions, what has struck the group’s imagination are the numerous animal figures on display, and in particular the sculptures made with humble materials.
The theme we would like to develop is a very profound one, The Fantastic Animal, where the different characteristics of these figures allow us to elaborate the unconscious universe of each of us, in its various animal forms, as identified by the studies of C. G. Jung.
Furthermore, fantastic animals are historically the result of the integration of several animals, which contribute to bringing not only different parts of themselves into the same object, but the work will be created from the integration of several people, fostering socialisation and group recognition among those who participate.
The materials
The humble materials with which we will carry out the project, in addition to belonging to an environmental ethic, because they are natural or because they are the result of creative recycling, are also the production materials of the Würth company itself, which will allow us to achieve total integration with all the different areas in which Würth develops its objectives.
The artwork
The final work will be created by the group under the stimulus of the artist De Scisciolo.
The intention is to transform the sketch – doodle created by the group, as a sign of the vital energy that emerges on the two-dimensional surface of the sheet, into a three-dimensional Snake.
The Snake is the symbol of deep vital energies capable of developing, emerging and creatively transforming our individuality.
It is an animal found in every culture in the world and symbolically represents the first stage of the emergence of the unconscious, but also the transformation, healing and evolution of one’s identity, which here becomes a group identity.
“Accustomed to fearing our instincts and emotions, we have confined the symbol of the Snake to spheres of profound negativity, forgetting that among the many qualities it represents, many could be valuable in reviving and renewing our daily life and bringing it more into contact with our visceral side. The Snake as a symbol of transformation and renewal is an archetype of all cultures.” C. G. Jung
The snake will take shape on the very outline of the visual signature, through the iron wire that will retrace its path and generate spaces – areas in which 3 materials belonging respectively to the 3 natural worlds can be integrated: wool = animal; iron = mineral; hemp = plant.
The doodle reworked with the wire will be made three-dimensional thanks to the rotation or twisting of the surfaces created by the crossing of the wire.
The participants will interpret the surfaces with the 3 materials in spontaneous and personal ways, creating textures of various kinds and thicknesses.
- It will be developed on a surface of approximately 2 / 2.50 square or linear metres
- It can be set up either horizontally or vertically
- The form will be evaluated based on the developments that emerged from the group
- It will remain at the Art Forum Wuerth until the exhibition closes
- It can be placed in the outdoor spaces
The ultimate goal
At the end of May/June 2024, we intend to create a temporary installation of the sculptures in the indoor/outdoor spaces made available by your venue, to create a fantastic space, made up of the display of the animal sculptures and the sets created by people with disabilities from the Hairam Association for the theatrical performance A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which will be staged at the Teatro Quirino in Rome, with a company from the Sant’Alessio, made up of blind actors. It is not difficult to imagine how this setting could be a stimulus to involve the exhibition’s visitors in performances and workshops.
The proposal for integration into the “Attraverso l’immagine” project
To stimulate everyone’s artistic work and to provide input for the creative initiative we have set out to realise, the Association has contacted the Apulian artist and sculptor, Pietro De Scisciolo, who has been invited to Rome by the Associazione Hairam APS.
The days on which this addition to the project will be carried out are 6, 7 and 8 March 2024. This period has been defined to include the Thursday workshop day, conducted at the Art Forum by the Hairam Association, and based on the availability of all the participating organisations (Monte Tomatico Psychiatric Day Centre and students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, but with the participation also of the Academy of Fine Arts in Foggia) and in particular of the artist involved in our initiative.
Based on the availability we have gathered so far, the proposal is summarised as follows:
6 March, 2:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Presentation of the Project and the activities of the Art Forum
In the Great Hall of the main site of the Academy of Rome in Via di Ripetta, with the participation of the students, the professors involved, the artist Pietro De Scisciolo and the representatives of the Hairam APS Association and the Art Forum Würth Capena.
7 March, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm

April/May on a date yet to be determined
Presentation of the Project and the activities of the Art Forum Würth Capena
In the Great Hall of the main site of the Academy of Foggia, with the participation of the students, the professors involved, the artist Pietro De Scisciolo and the representatives of the Hairam APS Association and the Art Forum Würth Capena.
Pietro De Scisciolo was born in Terlizzi on 17 June 1967.
He discovered and cultivated his passion for sculpture from an early age by attending the artisan workshop of his father, a stonemason, together with the art studios of other local masters.
He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bari, graduating in sculpture in 1990, following his inclination for the figurative.
His contact with the material and his mastery of technique firmly determine his desire to consider and define himself as a sculptor rather than an artist.
He has won numerous competitions and tenders for official works of art, both religious and institutional, and his works can be found in various public and private collections.
His aesthetic research is a dichotomous balance between the playful and the poetic, favouring a working and use of materials that are in continuity with tradition. A combination of languages with which he presents works that are captivating for their effectiveness and realistic rendering, ironic and provocative at the same time. The three-dimensionality is translated into site-specific works in the form of installations and into monuments commissioned for public squares and buildings, including those located beyond the regional borders.
The result is a fluid and authentic interaction of the structures with the natural environment of the various territorial, historical and social contexts in which they are placed. As in the case of the Apulia Land Art Festival in 2018 and MACboat 2020 in Bisceglie. Since 2012, he has been present at many International Sculpture Symposiums.
He works at his studio-workshop in Terlizzi (BA) and since 2010 he has been a lecturer at the Academies of Fine Arts in Bari, Lecce, Catanzaro, Vibo Valentia and Reggio Calabria. He currently holds the position of lecturer in Ornamental Plastic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Foggia.
