Concept: Starting from the experience of the passage of Jacob’s Dream (Genesis 28), students will be led to experience how the emotions provoked by reality, by life lived in their own environment, lead them to conceive the true (with that which remains constant and unchanged) and the false (with that which contradicts constancy, and is absent). The interplay between the two parts leads to the possibility of designing an alternative form, which can transform the usual reality. This possibility triggers in the protagonist-subject a formal (artistic?) gesture that turns a real fact (i.e. temporary and subject to transformation) upside down, generating a new adaptation of space and place, recontextualising the inverted reality in the work. This way of working is similar to the concept of social sculpture by an artist such as Joseph Beuys, and to his own concept of the “counter-image”.
The workshop will give students the opportunity to conceive a work that can overturn and transform their daily reality, in a possible attempt.
In a current context such as today’s, which poses problems and urgencies that lead to a “discomfort of living”, being able to offer students the linguistic and formal tools that interact with the real environment represents a valuable skill; the right means to be able to think about transforming reality, overcoming the sense of powerlessness and demotivation that affects the younger generations.
