Giovanni Abbatepaolo
The workshop with Giovanni Abbatepaolo, organised by Prof. Cristina Chiappini, focuses on exploring the relationship between programming (coding) and graphic design, with a particular focus on typography.
Through the use of the JavaScript programming language and the p5.js library, participants experiment with the creation of dynamic and interactive graphic compositions, using inputs such as sound, mouse movement, device sensors and other data sources.
The objective is to provide students with the basic skills of coding applied to graphics, guiding them in the creation of concrete experiments. These include: the automatic generation of a typeface family from an initial matrix (parametric typography), the parametric animation of logos or words through sound, and the creation of visual patterns by randomly combining graphic modules.
The workshop days alternate between theoretical explanations and practical review sessions, fostering a hands-on approach that allows students to immediately apply the knowledge acquired and develop creative and personalised solutions.
Giovanni Abbatepaolo is a graphic designer and web developer with a solid background and an innovative approach to design. Having graduated with honours in Graphic Design and Visual Communication from the ISIA in Urbino, he is now a lecturer in Information Technology for Graphics and Creative Coding at the Academy of Fine Arts in Perugia, where he guides students on the specialisation course in Brand Design of Territories. His professional activity ranges from web development to UI/UX design, with notable collaborations for organisations such as Dyne.org and La Scuola Open Source. Since 2016, he has been working as a freelancer, combining creativity and technology in projects that explore generative graphics and information architecture. He has held numerous workshops at prestigious Italian institutions and presented his research at events such as the Milan Triennale. With an eye always on innovation, his work explores the dialogue between code, design and visual communication.
