Cultural mediation is a project conceived in 2018 by the Educational Services of the National Gallery, directed by Cristiana Collu, and launched in the same year in collaboration with the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. The experience is a valuable opportunity for students to enrich and deepen their studies within the setting of one of Italy’s most important museum institutions, while at the same time enhancing the experience of visiting the museum.
In fact, cultural mediation offers a new way of communicating the exhibition: a model based on active dialogue with the visitor, who is no longer a passive spectator, but an active participant in their own visit to the museum.
The speakers at the discussion will be the lecturers of the Academy of Fine Arts who have been involved in cultural mediation projects for years, the students who have participated in cultural mediation, and Isabella de Stefano, head of the Educational Services of the National Gallery and creator of the cultural mediation projects, who on this occasion will also talk about her volume Mediation Experience. The National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art and cultural mediation.
Mediation Experience. The National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art and cultural mediation (Edizioni Scientifiche Italiane, Naples 2022) is a volume that addresses the theme of cultural mediation from an experiential perspective, more practical than theoretical, describing the cultural mediation projects carried out in the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art with the students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. Cultural mediation inaugurates a communication model based on dialogue and on the experience not only of the mediator, but also of the visitor, who is the recipient and participant in the museum visit. Within this framework, the projects and workshops designed on the model of cultural mediation and inspired by the works of art held in the museum are described. The book also includes the voices of the different categories of visitors to whom the mediation was addressed, from children to the most vulnerable and marginalised audiences, from students to the inmates of a juvenile prison in Rome. The intention is to offer the reader a testimony, but also a useful tool for undertaking new actions and learning about cultural mediation through the eyes and privileged perspective of the public.
