The Academy of Fine Arts in Rome is pleased to announce the international conference “Artistic research and the third cycle in the arts”, which will be held on 20 July in person in the Lea Mattarella Great Hall and online on the TEAMS platform.
The Conference, designed to be a meeting to address the topic of doctorates, postgraduate training, and research belonging to the third cycle of studies in the arts, brings together the experience of several generations, from the most important researchers active in the academic discussion throughout Europe, to the young junior scientists who, thanks to the European project, have been able to start postgraduate research.
Over the past eighteen months, there has been intense and fruitful collaboration within the framework of the EU4ART_differences project, which aims precisely to develop new insights into Artistic Research, and collaborations between partner universities on third-cycle models.
These months have also been crucial for developing, in close collaboration with national stakeholders, a possible path leading to the establishment of ABAROMA’s third-cycle model, the first of its kind for the AFAM (Higher Education in Art and Music) sector.
At this crucial moment, the Conference will be an opportunity to discuss the themes of the third cycle in the arts in an international context, bringing together institutions (Ministry of Universities), national and European quality assessment agencies (ANVUR and EQ-Arts), and representatives of significant European projects (Creator Doctus, EU4ART_differences). Different practices and experiences will be shared, in a transdisciplinary approach (HUFA and LMA Doctoral Schools, Conservatory of Santa Cecilia, Zerynthia).
We will share the results of the first eighteen months of work in our project, giving the floor to the young researchers in the arts sector that we have been able to involve, and announcing the EU4ART_differences Doctoral Summer School that will take place from 6 to 9 September 2022.
The conference marks the start of an epochal period for Artistic Research, which is finally beginning to be recognised in Italy as well. In fact, the Academies and other AFAM institutions have been given the opportunity to enter into agreements with universities and research bodies for the submission of training projects for the third cycle, i.e. doctorates.
It was precisely the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome that, at the end of the 19th century, established the first example of a Doctorate, the Pensionati Artistici. This model, abandoned by the Academy, then spread throughout the world, also becoming part of university practice. The conference will be an opportunity to pick up this thread and present the new Doctoral Courses, for which our Academy has applied for accreditation.
The first, included in the framework of the Doctoral Programmes of national interest and presented by a Consortium formed by the Tor Vergata University of Rome, the Academy in Rome and other Academies of Fine Arts, will be dedicated to Communication Sciences and Promotion of Cultural Heritage. The Academy of Rome will offer two scholarships for the “New Media for Cultural Heritage” module.
The second PhD was presented by a consortium formed by Roma Tre University, the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, and the National Academy of Dance and Dramatic Art “Silvio d’Amico”, and will have a single module in “Performing Arts”, for which the Academy of Rome will offer a scholarship.
