Valentina Tanni: from the first modem to Memestetica

“Dal primo modem a Memestetica” with Valentina Tanni will retrace, also in biographical form, her critical and curatorial activity in the field of new media art, from the early 2000s to the present day, two years after the release of Memestetica with Nero edizioni. The essay retraces the path that led “from Marcel Duchamp to TikTok”, and has been a viral success. Through examples, case studies and audiovisual materials, Tanni will focus on the central themes of her research: the relationship between art and technology in history, the development of network cultures, the creation and dissemination of artistic content online, and the memetic and collaborative dynamics that characterise contemporary visual culture.

Valentina Tanni is an art historian, curator and lecturer; her research focuses on the relationship between art and technology, with a particular focus on web cultures. She teaches Digital Art at the Politecnico di Milano and New Media Aesthetics and Digital Cultures at NABA – Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome and Milan. She has published “Random. Navigando contro mano, alla scoperta dell’arte in rete” (Link editions, 2011) and “Memestetica. Il settembre eterno dell’arte” (Nero, 2020). Since November 2020, she has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Quadriennale Foundation in Rome.

“From the first modem to Memestetica” is part of Colours and Crafts of the Multimedia Arts, a series of meetings organised by Elena Giulia Rossi as part of the School of New Technologies for Art to investigate the multiple facets of multimedia production, from the creative moment to its conservation and placement on the market, through the most diverse experiences of artists, curators, computer scientists and theorists. With the most varied backgrounds, they have all been active on the international multimedia arts scene for more than twenty years, united by a constant commitment to both theory and practice.

The series entitles participants to 1 CFA (upon attendance at 5 out of 6 meetings)
