On Monday 20 March, at 5:00 pm, the docu-film “Roma Isola Aperta”, which has already taken part in the 17th edition of the Rome Film Fest, Freestyle section, will be presented at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
Conceived and curated by Raffaella Frascarelli and Sabrina Vedovotto, the docu-film is produced by the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and the Nomas Foundation. “Roma Isola Aperta” is directed by Monkeys Video Lab (Simone Valente, Alessio Rucchetta, Valerio Sammartino) and features the direct involvement of students on the Controcampo course of the educational laboratory of the Department of Applied Arts, Photo and Video.
“Roma Isola Aperta” offers us an unprecedented look at the capital’s art scene, taking us into the studios of some of the artists who have decided to live and work here. The docu-film introduces the general public to the artists’ poetics and work, through images and words that give us a glimpse of their daily lives.
“Roma Isola Aperta” is the first part of a docu-film that has collected and will continue to collect the testimonies of artists who reflect on the social body, gender, politics, science, economic equality, racism and social justice, starting from the socio-cultural imaginaries of Rome and the world, addressing issues such as the relationship between time and art, power and culture, history and community, politics and aesthetics. Some individual documentaries, aimed at learning about and exploring the Roman art world, have already been made and can currently be viewed on the Nomas Foundation’s YouTube channel.
“Roma Isola Aperta” was born from Roma città aperta, a project in progress, conceived in 2020 by Raffaella Frascarelli and Sabrina Vedovotto, to bring the public closer to the arts through a series of studio-visits and initiatives aimed at involving citizens, leading them to rediscover their neighbourhoods, including through getting to know the artists who live there.
Following the screening of the documentary, a debate with the artists, the curators of the project and the students who participated in its creation will allow us to explore new aspects of this documentary work on the artistic life of a contemporary city.
