Prima Necessità was created through the collaboration between Spazio Pane and the artists and curators of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.

The coincidence between the artistic process and the process of making essential goods forms the basis of this exhibition project. Simple elements such as water, flour and yeast are the starting point for reflections that concern both the value of bread as a necessary good and the value of the equally necessary good of the work of art. The three artists present their works in relation to all the stages of bread production, which are examined and reinterpreted in the works on display. The search for universal values within natural materials; the restoration of dignity to leftovers in the act of consumption by animals; the reconstitution of the link between the local area and the production of bread, a moment of sharing lost over time and revived here. Prima necessità is a reclaiming of the inalienable urgency of nourishment for body and spirit.

In the exhibition:
Rossella Antezza, Guglielmo D’Ugo and Luca Falessi

Rossella Antezza (Matera, 1999) creates Valori in Polvere and literally packages the historical value of materials. Each chosen substance is presented in the form of powder, inside packaging inspired by food product packaging.

Guglielmo D’Ugo (Rome, 2000) presents Resti in pasto, all’attesa, reusing the ingredients left over during the baking process to shape small loaves which, placed in the bakery garden, he offers to birds and insects in the form of a banquet. The waste thus regains its original value as food returned to nature.

Luca Falessi (Rome 2000) with Lievitando examines the process of baking and leavening. He makes moulds, and therefore edible loaves, which are the result of a search for textures in the urban context of Campoli Appennino. The town reflected in the staple food that suggests the strong links between bread and the local area.

SPAZIO PANE – Forno e arte contemporanea, produces bread, the first non-industrial bread in a long time in the town of Campoli Appennino. It arose from an idea by the artist Sara Ciuffetta with Marco Ciuffetta and Viviana Ciammetti, who relate bread and its production to contemporary art works and interventions. The desire to enhance and consolidate a link with the local area – with total respect for the environment and the context that surrounds it – stems from the need to strengthen sharing and cultural growth within a community.
