Il Linguaggio dell’incisione offers an unprecedented and cross-cutting perspective on graphic design. Unlike existing textbooks on the subject, which deal either with the technique or the history of engraving, this book, while not neglecting these aspects, addresses the boundless theme of printmaking from the point of view of its specific “language”. In addition to drawing on her extensive teaching experience, the author writes as an artist immersed in the subject, necessarily filtering the content through her personal vision.
The volume consists of three parts. The first is dedicated to the techniques: intaglio, woodcut and, to a lesser extent, lithography; it is accompanied by engravings by contemporary artists and students of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, which will serve to illustrate and clarify the techniques with the help of diagrams and photographs.
The second part consists of a concise chronological overview of printmaking, from the 16th century to the present day, which explores the analysis of language in relation to the historical and cultural context.
Finally, the third part brings together a series of in-depth studies on artists or artistic situations: these short essays can provide some examples of a methodological approach and allow a more in-depth exploration of the various themes through the analysis of the works. This last section also analyses the work of important contemporary artists who consider graphic language as a fundamental means of expression.
